School Uniform Policy

It is the responsibility of the Governing Body of each school to decide on the uniform policy or dress code, and it is the Headteacher's responsibility to make sure pupils keep to the rules.

The Governing Body of St Thomas’ Church of England Primary School is unanimous in its decision that a uniform will be required for all pupils attending the school.

Any breaches of the school uniform policy will be dealt with by the Headteacher. At Primary School it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure the child wears the correct uniform and it is unlikely that a child will be punished for uniform breeches. The Headteacher will seek to find out the reason for the breech in policy and respond sensitively to any financial difficulties parents may have in providing school uniform.

More serious punishments like suspension or expulsion from the school are only considered acceptable if the parent/pupil's disregard of uniform policy is persistent and defiant.

Whilst at St Thomas’ parents are directed to a supplier who provides uniform items with our school logo this is not compulsory. Parents may choose to purchase uniform items in the appropriate school colours (and without logos) from any supplier. Local supermarkets and children’s clothing suppliers all stock appropriate school colours.

School uniform plays a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of our school and setting an appropriate tone. School uniforms instil pride; support positive behaviour and discipline; encourage identity with, and support for, school ethos; ensure pupils of all races and backgrounds feel welcome; protect children from social pressures to dress in a particular way; and nurture cohesion and promote good relations between different groups of pupils. Above all, the Governing Body of St Thomas’ believe that school uniform supports effective teaching and learning.

The Governing Body has a duty, by statue, to conduct the school in a way to ensure that school policies promote good behaviour and discipline amongst the pupil body. It is felt that the wearing of a school uniform is supportive in carrying out this duty and therefore the wearing of appropriate school uniform is considered as compulsory for all pupils.

If any complaints about the uniform policy or dress code are received then initial attempts to resolve disputes will be dealt with by the Headteacher but if a satisfactory conclusion is not reached then these complaints will be directed to the Governing Body.
